How not to promote Pubcon to friends

Or how to ruin relationships and stay married

So a friend of the family used to do work on the web and got away from it. She's now trying to get back into it and asking for my help. She wants to get clients to build sites and would like to use my name and reputation as a back up for it to help her grow her business.

I mention Pubcon, how great it is, just send a simple link to the official website and so on. How it would be a great jump start to getting back into the business again.

I find out that while I'm gone she tells my wife that I invited her to Las Vegas with me. And the mention of it was just a tad misleading. Luckily I tell my wife everything that goes on with that friend and we can laugh it off.

But just the same, I think I'll go back to only telling guys about Pubcon.

And when your wife asked you about it, the wrong answer would have been, "What's a Pubcon?" :)

Same with fiancee. We've both had odd situations come up that would not be quite believable if not for trust and knowing the truth will 'prove out'.

For us, she would blow it off, knowing that I would already be upset enough that 'friend' put me in what could have been a bad spot.

I don't travel much, but she does. It's tough under the best of circumstances. 'Friend' isn't very bright - shooting her mouth off over something like that.....

In the end, her comment or joke, no matter what the intent hurts herself because I'm not as inclined to offer the advice and tips that I may have before. Because it's also about her husband and her kids in this friendship, even having Thanksgiving together, I'll look beyond it and just keep it in the back of my mind for now. I'm just not as enthusiastic as I may have been about someone learning some new things.

I always like the idea of having someone local or in my life that knows what I'm talking about or is interested in the business. That is why many of us go to Pubcon and various events. It's as much social as learning a specific fact. Oh well.
