What's about that "black" and plastic

What makes designers be so much crazy about black today?!

I'm not talking about ordinary people that like black - that's fine - everybody can like whatever they want and what they feel good about.

I'm talking about designers that simply have no other choice but black.

I recently got the Samsung 40" TV, series 7 - it has that ugly shiny black frame that cannot be looked at during the day. Unfortunately all other TVs in any store are about the same - shiny black.
I saw a new Sony coming out with the metal frame that is kind of matt, but it's LED and the price is way over what I would pay for a device to see the news, local weather, and a movie sometimes. That Samsung was originally way over but I got it at some kind of sale (like one knows when it's a real sale and what is a real price).

Or, I'm looking for an internal blu-ray burner, find some LG that seems to be decent, and it's black - but I'm buying white or gray PC case!

I looked into phones - Panasonic, what else - they're all black! And I got the one (I wanted talking caller ID), it hurts my eyes!

What's wrong with that nice (metallic) gray from years ago?

Even if you find something that fits your color request - there are no features that you're looking for, so you go back and end up with features that you want, but forget the look.

And it's not just color, but all that artificial plastic look that makes me sick. I feel like all wrapped into a cheap (cancerous) PVC bag.

Don't even ask about furniture. Boy, if you want modern, you get some veneer (artificial or wood) and MDF or semi-hollow particle board, being that IKEA or a featured designer. They even try to tell me how MDF is better then real wood.
And yes, everything is wrapped into shiny plastic - again.

maybe it's actually hard to make a good-looking plastic and the chinese manufacturing processes aren't up to the task yet.

I think the idea of black on large flat screen tv's was to make it almost invisible when watching with the lights dimmed. Shiny black seams to make the frame blend in with the background/shaddows. I got a 42" Samsung last year and to be honest the color doesn't realy bother me, what does bother me is the finish, that shows up even the slightest finger print or smudge.

Shiny is for those who wish to see themselves reflected in their possessions ..as they wish for their possessions to reflect what they perceive as themselves ..which is why iphones are shiny ..("I can see myself while I'm using this Hi-tech gadget ..I'm one of the elite... I have arrived ") ..self image reinforcement.

Shiny is distracting and is for idiots ..most people are wanting to be distracted from the reality of their lives ..crave the perceived symbols of status and success..and are idiots..

there is also sexual conotation .. as in oiled leather and latex and pvc ..especially on black ..skin ...or synthetic ..

as an ex ..and now ..once again active ad agency owner/director ..some of you would be amazed at what "we know about why you buy"..what attracts you..and why ..and which psych buttons to push in ads or content on or of the net , music ,art ,religion etc etc ..and product design

The only thing that I'm fine with so far. Gray with light gray perforated leather inside. Thanks to the sales guy to get me off the idea of black leather inside (because of kids). I feel so nice when I get into it.

BTW, yes, the sales guy did not have the black-inside in stock. He compared to to rental car when he got me take the light one. I liked the comparison and said yes... and he sold me a car... :)

Shiny sells

To those that put led lights under their cars, install 1000W of music into it, put some kind of ROAR exhaust pipe, and finally kill someone on the road.
And those that watch fights on (shiny) TVs.
And those that wear shiny jackets and go to night clubs to have fun with girls...

I think Leosghost is right - there is some psychotic background - kinda brain washing at the end.

Ah... getting into conspiracy now...

But this has reminded me onto something else that I actively participated in lately (locally) - walking around and checking on condos.

To add to mack's post, the other reason TV frames are black is to increase the contrast between the colored light of the screen and the margin, making the colors brighter (and our product worth that much more money . . . )

and in regards of getting along with the surrounding - why not simple black?
And yes, you can see every single particle on it.

black ink is cheaper to manufactuer with plastics. its about the bottom line.

any colors, obviously cost more, due to more inks needed to integrate into the plastic.

And you'll laugh when you hear I thought (more then once) to wrap it nicely into protective sheets and paint the frame with some spray I get from Home Depot.
Just to make it dull...

I should let kids make it "happy" TV - they would be thrilled... Half Barbie, half Lego. He, he, he...

P.S.
I saw a Lamborghini with black leather over the dashboard. The stitch looked good. Maybe the skin idea is not bad.
