Had my laptop around 6 months constantly in use and I think the fan has packed up inside.

Its Hp by the way. Also I have noticed that the caps lock key sometimes works the opposite way it should ie light on should be uppercase but nope its lower.

Whats the best way of sorting out my problem guys here in the uk.

Cheers
Adam

Assuming it's new, just take/send it back to the vendor for repair/replacement. If it's only 6-months old, it should be under the manufacturers warrantly.

indeed it is new but finding the reciept could be a problem lol.

thanks for the advice. Assuming I cant find It I guess im best of just putting it in the shop to be repaired.

Yeah, you probably cannot fix it yourself that easily. If it was just the cooler that needed to be cleaned, you could probably do that if you opened the case and risked breaking something, but the caps-lock-issue seems out of range of home repairs and might be an indication that other things will fail.

You don't need a receipt, but you do need proof of purchase - typically a credit-card statement will suffice.

Back up all your work and be prepared
a) to be without it for two weeks
b) to get another machine back in its place

Phone the shop, ask for advice and tell them you are willing to bring it in. Most likely they will want to send it off to the manufacturer rather than replace it one the spot. Give them a sob story and when they refuse to budge, ask to see the manager. However, since it's six months old, I don't think you have an absolute right to a replacement (but check with Consumer Direct, I could be wrong).

The Caps Lock key is probably a non-critical design fault rather a symptom of something serious. It might even be a software issue. Also, the overheating problem could be a software or driver issue - the CPU may not be idling correctly.

Kaled.

I'm not in the UK, but I recently had an issue with a laptop (dell) that turned out to be due to a faulty motherboard. We originally thought it was due to a faulty fan, optical drive, or hard disk- because it made a high pitched whine and clicking noise and the computer got really hot and froze (heh).

As there are no dell techs on this little Alaskan island-they asked if I felt comfortable replacing the mother board myself. It actually wasn't that big a deal. Detailed instructions provided. Swapping out a fan shouldn't be too hard to do yourself-if in fact you can trace the issue definitively.

I recall that there was a utility you could run on the provided system disk that would test the different components to see what returned an error- you might check there if contacting tech support doesn't solve your issue.

Good Luck!

If it's within its warranty period, don't open the case yourself, it may invalidate the manufacturers warranty.

I will try to fish out a credit card statement. It was bought online from a very well known website.

Lets see what they say :)
