The Union Society chief clerk died recently, while not a world figure or instantly recognisable to many on here, his influence on the behaviour of many (including future govt ministers) cannot be over stated.

While a student in Cambridge I came to respect this man greatly, it was rumoured at the time that he had laid the foundation stone to Peterhouse college, I never found out if that was true, but :)

I also recall his 'retirement' was one of the most unjust events I have ever known, all starting with the purchase of an antique desk with which he had nothing at all to do with.

He did however point out to the term time president that it had cost the entire terms budget and wasnt really justified, hence his downfall was swift and spiteful.

Any way Barry have a drink on me at the pearly gates and thanks for your help.
From the obit:

'At various stages, the staff of Fenlanders included a male chef who hated cooking;
a female cleaner with serious hygiene issues;
an epileptic barman who affected a loathing for most undergraduates;
and an octogenarian footman, John Gates, whose main claim to fame was having waited at furtive Belgravia dinner parties during Edward VIII's courtship of Mrs Simpson.'

Yes the Union society really was that mad.
