Dumpster Diving and Basement Cleaning

What's the difference?

Well, I have just about completed the sadest computer related task of my career.

I'm headed to the local land fill with an entire pickup box full of Commodore Computers and related stuff. Two decade worth of work. Sorta bummed, but it needed to be done.

On the plus side, I get my basement back.

I always thought that the term "Dumpster Diving" referred to people...

It has no particular high-tech connotations - just refers to anyone who engages in the activity, no matter what sort of "treasure" they may be seeking.

Agreed :). But I think that Basement Cleaning and Dumpster Diving are vastly different :) Mabye we should dumpster dive for Brett's old computer stuff :)

hehe - celerityfm, that _is_ what I was referring too. My basement had become a collecting ground for commodore equipment. I did find some passwords and equipment I never knew I had. I was and expedition into the unknown. I'm just glad old computers don't decompose ;-)

Ah, dumpster diving. That brings back some memories… like last Sunday when I found a stack of books thrown out and sold them on ebay for about $20 a piece.

I have lived and died dumpster diving since I was 19 and I am not about to give it up now. eBay has only increased my addiction. 'Cause now the really cool things I find in the trash don't need to find a home in my house, just someone's house.

A rare hard bound Conan the Barbarian book (sold on half.com for $55)

A beautiful chandelier that now hangs in my dining room.

A wide screen TV I gave to my neighbor (I don't watch TV). a $1200 TV that was put in the trash due to the fact that one of the knobs was broken (replacement cost $22)

Bound copies of Jehovah Witness magazines. (Sold on ebay for $150 total)

I'm hanging on to my vintage typewriters (circa 1915); my Kim single board computer with 512 bytes ram and hex keypad; my Aim 65 with alphanumeric keyboard, Rom-resident basic interpreter, 2K ram and onboard thermal printer; my <gasp> Micro Technology Unlimited 6502 computer with dual 8-inch floppy drives and CODOS operating system (may be the only one left in existance) and a General Motors Turbohydromatic 200 transmission. Also an outlawed 1970 black light poster of Donald Duck smoking a bong.

Since we are digging into ancient history, I threw out a 300baud terminal I had a couple years ago but I still have a TI-59 programmable calculator (saved formulas and data on these little magnetic strips through a reader). Maybe I should ebay it :-)
