Next Friday at 5:31pm EST the seconds since Unix (time_t) EPOCH reaches 1234567890.

I suggest we celebrate with a topical Word Game ?

For those that don't know what I'm talking about:-

A momentous occasion indeed. But, I get 5:31pm CST on the 13th. Or am I confused?

No, you are correct. Well, almost correct ... you're about 30 seconds off, give or take a few milliseconds ;)
I ran this using CST as the time zone:

mysql> SELECT FROM_UNIXTIME(1234567890, '%Y %D %M %r %x');

Not only that . . .

2009 13th February 05:31:30 PM 2009

13 - 9 + 2 = 6

.¦..¦
05:31:30 5 + 1 = 6
...¦..¦
05:31:30 3 + 3 = 6

Pfft. And they were worried about 2K.

:-P

Whoops, thanks for the correction. Coop - what's 30 seconds between foo-ites, I mean, really ;)

LifeInAsia / Rocknbil - that's a bit of a concern. Also, "Bell Labs Unix Time" is an anagram of "Earth Martian Invasion".

Well, it would be but for the fact that it's missing 2 letters and 6 others are incorrect, but it's close enough for me to stock up on tin-foil.

Should we order a cake?

A Liberty Bell (Labs) Cake?

I think it's more important to look at the true anagrams of it: "Blab Mullein Exist" or "Blab Mullein Exits." To have something exist and exit (as a euphemism for not existing anymore) at the same time is certainly indicative of something on the Fringe...

Or: "Lullabies Bent Mix" (I think we know what type of music should be playing with the cake!)

"Blab Mullein Exist" or "Blab Mullein Exits."

How on earth could I have missed that!

<-- off to paint a "The end is nigh" sign.

LOL! Yes indeed, it is. Hey, it's not like it was a year 2000 issue where the world was really going to stop, you know?

The real problem with seconds since epoch will come in 2038: it won't fit in a _signed_ 32bit integer anymore. Yes, time_t is signed.

For those who like Friday the 13th: the wraparound due to the overflow on "Tue Jan 19 03:14:07 2038" would make time jump back to "Fri Dec 13 20:45:52 1901"
