Has anyone had any luck at upgrading to a new motherboard & CPU without having to reinstall the OS?
Can it even be done?
The OS in question is Win98se.

...no problems here - just acquired a new mobo/cpu for my Win2K machine which went in without a hitch and the old kit has been transplanted into a Win98 machine. Win2K plugged and played perfectly with Win98 just asking for the CD before doing its stuff - bit of a refreshing change really...
...if only Windows was this well behaved all of the time...

I'm actually surprised ritch_b was able to swap mobo/cpu on a Win2k setup. I've restored Windows 98SE partitions to a different computer in the past. I don't think its an ideal way to configure a system, but it works. I suggest you keep your third-party drivers on the same partition or as CD as Windows will ask for them on the new computer.
