does anyone know how to locate the google map van?

i saw a cool article about a street in pittsburgh where all kinds of people were standing outsite waiting and staging funny stuff...

would like to know how they knew the van was coming...

does he play an ice cream man tune too?

if I knew, I would seriously follow the thing around constantly in a flatbed with enormous signage, disco lights and gogo dancers, dressed like "Waldo" (from the book series.. you know, the big glasses, pompom tuque, the red and white stripey shirt... ). Can you imagine the exposure?

seriously, if you find out how to track down the Google Van, tell me, and I'm there.

oh - a tip: look for street views of office buildings with street-level mirrored windows. You'll see what the van looks like.

i wonder if they would publish me sitting on my lawn in my birthday suit, in a lawn chair sipping a coconut daquari, in a pair of black socks and a gnome hat.

No, black socks are SO establishment. You need white socks to get the Google cool-kid approval.

The "van" may be a car, or any vehicle to which the Google-cam can be securely attached. No idea how you'd find it, though, unless you know someone who knows one of their drivers (or know someone who does), or if you have a tech-savvy friend who spots it and calls you.

Three pics of me in my truck so far in Google Maps, but the resolution isn't good enough to prove it. They also took several photos of my house, which is *way* outside any city in a very rural area, but those pics haven't been published yet.

That's just as well, as the privacy and security aspects of this bother me a bit...

The Google-cam looks like a ~10-inch matte-black ball on a ~2.5-foot-tall stalk, mounted at or near center of the roof of the vehicle. It has something like 11 digital cameras in it, seen as small round protrusions from the ball. There is a description and a picture of it --I believe in one of the Google blogs-- if you want to try searching for it.

The several vehicles I've seen have all had magnetic signs on the side-doors with the Google logo on them.
