OUTER space smells of fried steak, scientists revealed yesterday.

The universe also has an aroma of hot metal and motorbike welding, Nasa experts said.

If you keep on reading further you will see:

There is nothing in space and nothingness cannot really have a smell. - By SIR PATRICK MOORE, Astronomer

There is nothing in space

Does that include Dark Matter - and how does one define "nothing"?

SIR PATRICK MOORE

Amateur astronomer (1923-1981)

He authored more than 70 books on astronomy and was the presenter of The Sky at Night on the BBC. Presumably he gained enough knowledge about space to realize that it contained more than nothing.

Back on topic, scientists are attempting to recreate the smell, for training purposes. The smell itself appears to be the result of ions interacting with material in the space suits. So technically space doesn't smell, but used space suits do. Frankly I can consider far worse aromas than steak emanating from a used space suit.

This sounds like a good challenge for Mythbusters.

Sir Patrick is still alive - or did you mean that he was an amateur astronomer only until 1981.

Hey, I get my facts from the internet :)

My sincere apologies to Sir Patrick for rumoring his early demise.

How do they know what outer space smells like when they haven't sent a manned mission beyond the orbit of Luna yet. That's not very outer.

For your information outside of the solar system space smells like a freshly washed baby ferret. This is the usual aroma throughout the universe apart from the Andomeda galaxy and the clouds of Magellan which smell respectively of vindaloo and old socks. If you have any other preference "Chanel no 5" or "Brut" for instance please let me know and I'll change the mix.

PS
Sir Patrick Moore is a great British institution. (I expect he smells of mothballs and ginger ale)

Really? I could have sworn I saw the moon and some stars up there the other night.

Really? I could have sworn I saw the moon and some stars up there the other night.

Possible explanations:
- smoke & mirrors
- swamp gas
- low-flying aircraft
- weather balloons
