Anyone have their laptop seized yet with these stupid new US laws that allow airport/border security to take your electronics away without any reason? I'm about to head out to some eastern places like Czech Republic, Croatia, Bosnia, etc and really don't want to lose everything, either at the start of a trip or after doing lots of work enroute. I wonder if it would be better to make my stuff less/more attractive. Wrap duct tape around my laptop, put a Bush/Cheney sticker on it, anything to make less of a target.

Short of leaving your laptop at home, you can help ensure that it doesn't get seized or otherwise detained by following a few simple guidelines.

For example, examinations of documents and electronic devices are a crucial tool for detecting information concerning terrorism, narcotics smuggling, and other national security matters; alien admissibility; contraband including child pornography, monetary instruments, and information in violation of copyright or trademark laws; and evidence of embargo violations or other import or export control laws

Maybe with important stuff it's worth uploading it to the web somewhere so if your laptop is confiscated/lost/blows up you won't lose your work.

I know I sure as h**l will never take my laptop when traveling to the US. There's no such things as privacy rights there. I'll take my iPhone but make sure there's not much personal info on it. Maybe I'll delete my contacts and write down the important phone numbers on paper too :-) It's scary the kind of things the US govt is getting away with.
