Megadose C... from 10k - 30k mg depending on how acute the condition is, broken down into smaller doses of 1000 to 1500mg throughout the day.
Ester-C (available in most pharmacies) is almost twice as effective as traditional C since it's metabolized far more effectively. Even better are the brands that are drawn from whole food sources. (available at your local health food store)
The only thing to be aware of is coming off megadoses slowly, even once the illness has headed for the hills. Continue to take the C for a couple of additional days while progressively lowering the dosage.
I've used this (along with lots of garlic when acute) to effectively combat every brush I've had with an upper or lower respiratory infection, whether viral or otherwise.
Haven't been on antibiotics or needed to have an illness related doctor visit in over 10 years. :)

And those on birth control pills remember it can affect them too, particularly when you stop taking the vitamin C. Can't remember why though, just remember learning about it in Biochem class.
Also anyone with a common cold shouldn't be taking antibiotics or really even going to the doctor (if it's doctor-bad it's not likely to just be a cold). Rest and fluids really are the best cure (this one I can even remember the biological reasons why too :)).
