The world's longest wrestling match took place during the 1912 Summer Olympics in Stockholm. The first match of the final round, between Martin Klein (RUS) and Alfred Asikainen (FIN), turned out to also be the last of the games. The match lasted a whooping 11 hours and 40 minutes. After Klein finally took the victory, he was too tired to compete in the final. Thus Claes Johansson, the only remaining finalist, became the gold medalist.
And, from olympic wrestling we move swiftly on to another championship game. This time the sport is table tennis.
During the 1936 Table Tennis World Championship in Prague, two very defensive players took well over an hour contesting a single point.
And, finally -- soccer; arguably the most popular sport world wide.
In 2002, the Madagascan national league match between AS Adema and Stade Olympique turned out to be the highest scoring soccer game in history. The game ended with the outlandish score of 149-0, in AS Adema's favor. But it was not their outstanding skill that led to the otherwordly victory. Instead, the victory was a result of Stade Olympique deliberately scoring one own goal after another in protest over a refereeing decision. The visitors simply directed each kick-off directly towards their own goal. AS Adema could do little but watch as Stade Olympique self-destructed.
And that's it for this week ...
Apparently the longest cricket match on record was between South Africa and England in South Africa, 1939. It started on March 3rd and continued until March 14th. Unfortunately the match couldn't be finished as the England team had to catch the boat home the next day. In light of this the game was declared a draw!
