Do you place a small item between the 'roller' and the semi circular metal plate and then turn the handle to create a pattern on the small item?

Do you place a small item between the 'roller' and the semi circular metal plate and then turn the handle to create a pattern on the small item?

I've never seen it in action. I'll provide another picture in a minute.
