Sometimes, rarely, but now and again I find that I just want to escape for the weekend. Leave the laptop behind and try and take a break.

I find though when I do this I get laptop withdrawal symptoms and it takes me around 5 days (not a weekend) to fully unwind from the stress and pressures of the job.

Whenever I see a computer I yearn to log onto the net, just to check there are no problems with the site etc.

How long does it take for you to unwind when you take a break or holiday?

I have made it a habit to check my websites once a day or at least every second day when I am on holiday. And if there is no internet access available I call the office. This usually takes only 5 minutes of my time every day but thats the only way I can enjoy my holiday. I do not get involved in every day business though. I do not want to hear about it. I only have to get sure that no major catastrophe has happened. Make sure that I do not come back and there is no business anymore.

I learned the lesson not to get involved with everyday business while on vacation the hard way when I was in China for a few days. I logged into my paypal account from there and what happened: The account was restricted because of my chinese IP. Took two weeks until the restriction was lifted again.

Usually a phone call to the office now goes like this:

"Hello, everything ok, did anything happen?"
Answer: "Nothing we can not handle, enjoy your holiday."

Then I am content and I can enjoy my vacation.

I am self employed so I have no office to call. I always take my laptop and try to get online every couple of days to keep on top of email, enquiries, etc. I find this less stressful than not knowing what is happening. Sad or what?

It is difficult... but essential... to let go. Think of letting go on a holiday as practice for that serious injury or the few days detained to 'help the police with their enquiries'.

I usually have a laptop with me and my cell is on. Although I tell my clients I'm going on vacation, I don't have anyone to take over for that time, so if an emergency happens, I need to deal with it. Fortunately, my clients are very understanding and try to keep anything in that week at a minimum...

On vacation I take laptop and cell phone. If a client or potential client needs immediate attention, secretary scans necessary documents and attaches to email. Then I call client. Been doing that for years. Wife seems to understand. :)
