Sorry for starting it so late on a Friday... I won't necessarily be around to respond to guesses, so just fire them off and I'll acknowledge the winner by its sequence in this thread

It's a spring activated whatchmadoodle. Used in fire suppression systems?

Oh Gizmo - It's been so long! :)

Is it used on a car?

How about an intermolecular torsion spring?

Looks like that clicker-part of a pen that makes it push the ink out so you can write.

It's a brass spring compression part, for automotive use I think. Still trying to remember what I was doing when I had something very similar in my hands....

I think Grandpa is on to something here. I believe it might be something that reacts to heat to pull open or closed a switch or valve. Doesn't appear automotive to me, but then I gave up going under the hood about 20 years ago.

But, gee, it's small, so I'm thinking it connects to an electric switch.

Could it be for switching the interior light of your car on and off when you open/close the door?

it's a drawbar spring!

A spring for use in overload situations. In a drawbar spring, the load is applied at the ends of loops which pass through the spring's center and are hooked around the opposite end, thus compressing the spring upon loading. A common application of the drawbar spring is when supporting a porch swing.

I'm going to venture a guess ... and say that it's a drawbar spring!

DrDoc, you win!

the next one's yours. just don't do what I did and start it on a Friday afternoon, then leave for the weekend...

Why not? Since it was always hard to find people to play the gizmo quiz at a specific time - which turned out to be its end - it might be an idea to revive the Gizmo quiz running a whole week.

Shall we amend the rules to state that a gizmo shall be introduced on Friday (sometime), and the answer revealed on Monday(sometime)?

That would probably increase participation. Winner decided by the gizmo poster?

All in favor...

That sounds good. But the gizmo poster should plan to participate, part of the quiz is feedback to questions about the gizmo. It's the interaction that's part of the fun.

lawman's observations of a successful GQ:

Have it on Saturday around the same time. Saturday mornings Eastern Time seemed to work well.

The original theme of rewarding funny answers (for those with no clue) with funny pictures helped keep the game moving and upbeat.

Whoever starts it must be ready to provide the funny pictures, clues when necessary, and generally moderate his/her own thread.

Whoever wins must either do the next GQ or enlist someone to do it.

It is lawdude's opinion that a weekend-long GQ would not work.

>> Whoever wins must either do the next GQ or enlist someone to do it.

That's the hardest part. Most who play aren't up for hosting it the next week. This is how it keeps on dying out.

True. It definitely requires more effort than the Friday Word Game.

Suggestion: Like the Friday word game, include the instructions each week with the first post. Specify that if you play, you accept responsibility for hosting the next week's game if you win.

I'll take it upon myself to run the gizmo Saturday. And I'll include rules in the first post. I will also provide funnies as needed :)

Can we post the latest version of the "rules" here, just so I can include them correctly ;)

lawman

The rules went something like this:

1. The game will be posted on Saturday.
2. It must be about some gizmo.
3. The game must be confirmed by its host 24 hours in advance.
4. You may participate even if you don't know the answer. A funny picture will be awarded for a funny answer.
5. The first person who provides the exact answer with a link will be declared the winner.
5. The current winner is expected to host the next game.
6. If the winner declines to host the next game, he/she should pick which volunteer (within prior participants of the gizmo quiz) will host the next game.

Suggestions for rule modifications are welcome.

7. Whoever forgets to host the gizmo quiz shall get spanked with a rubber chicken not less than seven times.

I would have won anyway. Two years ago already. Time starts to fly by when you are getting old...

The throw down that never happened.

We did try. I seem to recall that Bunltd was to host but something happened on the day and we had to abort.

I think we still ought to have that Rumble. Unfinished business.
