Those two words can have a major impact on your life and that of someone elses.

Have you thanked those who have helped you get to where you are today?

Do you do it enough?

Being a volunteer fire fighter, "thank you"'s are definitely something that makes me feel good about what I do. Most people have a poor image of the fire fighter, and thank you's are hard to come by. Most people take our services for granted and don't realize that when their fire alarm goes off in the middle of the night that fire fighters get out of their own beds to ensure that the house it safe for them. Every so often a thank you is thrown around, and it makes up for all those that don't say it. :)

I try to always give a "thank you" when it's appropriate. And I try hard not to be so much of a bum that I'm always having to give thanks. That second part is beginning to affect me, as in turning me into a grouch. The other day a fellow asked for a "little help". I helped him... told him to get his healthy arse off the street and gainfully employed. I didn't even get a Thank You for my efforts!

We all can benefit from a little help now and then. I wouldn't be where I'm at today, doing what I'm (supposed to be) doing, without a lot of help from kind people in this forum. It comes back to

"Give a man a fish; you have fed him for today. Teach a man to fish; and you have fed him for a lifetime"—Author unknown

One who I thank daily is one I call Higher Power. I've been blessed, it's best not to forget that.

I would disagree too. I've always looked at Firefighters as heroes, even as a kid growing up, ya'll were like the "thing". But you know what? I grew up in a small town, actually an island, where Firefighters are revered. I know of at least one East Coast State that has a totally different view of Firefighters.

THANK YOU!

P.S. Oh, and my neighbors? They thank you too. Don't mind them, it hasn't sunk in yet. You guys are like "chick magnets" too. :) Ooops, it works both ways, sorry ladies.

I agree this advice is useful for people who aren't humble enough, but I say "Sorry" too much. I'm trying to break the habit.

I agree that it is good to be polite and saying you are sorry when you are at fault is a good idea, but it is not a good thing to be too deferential. Today's "me first" etiquette means that if you do a good thing like hold a door open for someone or let them out of a side road when you had right of way, they don't think "what a nice thing to do, I must thank that person" they think "sucker!" and charge on through with no acknowledgement.

Sometimes it is good to be rude. I got great satisfaction a few years ago (when I was even bigger than I am now). In the supermarket as I walked past a couple of youngsters with their ill mannered brat in a push chair, said brat pointed at me and spouted "look at the big fat man mummy" The parents obviously thought it was funny and started grinning so I pointed at the child and said loudly "look at the ugly kid!" You should have seen their faces.

Not me, my grandpa was a fire fighter and I remember as a kid, when he was still working, being able to go down the fire house and slide down the pole and try on the cool stuff and sit in the truck. It was like having Batman for a grandpa.

I have to train some of our employees to use those phrases.

Re: "I'm Sorry"

Japanese businessmen/politicians have a convincing and most didactic way of expressing contrition: Suicide.

Much better than the American way... plush "rehab" in La Jolla for two weeks and then retiring to ones Caribbean villa with $50 million in looted assets.

Oh boy, I need to send a shout out to all the Developers out there. You guys/gals rock! Thank you, thank you, thank you.

If you're a Smart Developer and have a Smart db, you don't need an SEO! Tell your boss to "can that schmuck" who doesn't understand the value of your work 24/7/365. Yup, the one who makes Blog Posts about developers being challenged with SEO. Hey, to the person writing that Blog Post, me thinks you are "still learning". < I'll be nice.

So, the next time your Fortune 500 Boss decides to bring in an "SEO" in the true sense of the word and/or they want to hire one "in-house", let them know that they have you, there is no need for the others. But remember, its all about teamwork, someone has to steer that ship if ya know what I mean. ;)
