I was following up on a Google Alert today and clicked on a local newspaper site in Montana. I had read about half a paragraph when a popup window appeared.

It was a video ad complete with sound .. for a realtor.

I clicked to close the window. It came back within seconds. Ten tries, no cigar. I finally gave up and close the page. Something like that REALLY p***** me off!

I expect we'll see more of these critters.:(

Reminds me of the good old days of obtrusive pop up ads, that kept coming.

I sure hope not. There are still a couple that get by my "monitoring" software and they are usually from parked domains, you know, those popunder type ads. Arrrggghhh! I keep my sound up. When I visit a site, if I hear a second click that wasn't my doing, I'm most likely going to hit the back button, quickly. Between the Google Toolbar Popup Blocker and IE's internal stuff, there are only a few that get by, the rest are zapped!

The really annoying ones come sliding in on the screen. And then, some of them present you with their own rendition of the "Close" function that does something other than it should. :(

A little OT, I kind of like the "page" style ads. You know, the one's that sit up in the right hand corner and are begging to be "peeled back". What are those called?

Worst example I saw was CSS one, impossible to block and the irony was it required JS enabled to "close" it.

I agree, some folks think they are getting smart, but it only alienates visitors.

Bring back "punch the monkey!" ;)
