The Other Ones

Just got back from the Grateful Dead reunion show. Fabulous!

The Grateful Dead [dead.net] are back, minus Jerry Garcia. The band has gotten together at various points over the years under the moniker The Other Ones. Now they’ve launched a U.S. tour for the first time since Jerry’s death.

Last night they played in Washington D.C. – a 3+ hour show including an intermission set played by Robert Hunter.

I guess it’s no surprise that if I’ll travel from Austin to London to meet you guys in a pub that I have no problem flying to D.C. for one night for a concert!

I grew up in D.C., and I spent my early adult years as a fan of the Dead; friends and I saw them play probably two dozen times. So when we heard about the new tour we decided to meet in D.C. for a show. Tickets went on sale the day of PubConference – so while I was deep in some of the best SEO conversations I’ve ever had, my friend was in line for Other Ones tickets.

I flew up to D.C. yesterday, saw the show, closed out our favorite old bar after the show, and flew back today. Fabulous!

Now it's time to go catch up on my sleep. :)

Never was a huge fan, but came to at least appreciate them during college. The only show I ever saw was at Madison Square Garden. My friend worked for a big bank, and we got their sky box...champagne and expensive hors d'oeuvres all on the company ticket...;) Probably not the proper way to see the Dead, but fun nonetheless.

I hate to darken this forum with that nasty non-foo-ish word G**gl*, but the Dead may be back not only minus Garcia but MiNUS their cook,- who now works as the cook for Google.

Old rock and roll guys never die, they just go and work for Google.

Hmm.. i wonder who GoogleGuy really is....

They sounded pretty good, although it seemed like they were still working out the kinks. Musically they were great; technically they had a few glitches. Phil was not pleased with the levels on his guitar (he kept motioning to someone offstage) and they could've turned up the treble a bit on the vocals.

A majority of the songs they played were ones that would have Bob on the vocals ... they didn't avoid all of Jerry's songs, but they definitely favored Bob's.

It was amusing to look at the crowd; nearly 10 years older and an average of 10 lbs heavier. I guess everyone got jobs and started eating. ;)

Naw... all the younger Deadhead set hopped off the bus in the Pacific Northwest to sell recreational substances, panhandle, and boycott the hairbrush industry. ;) (Nice thing about Alaska: too cold to attract many neo-hippie panhandlers.)

The original hippies were pretty cool, at least from the viewpoint of a 5 year old kid. Old hippies are still pretty cool.
