If I get particularly good service from a company, I often add a page to a relevant site, so that others may learn from my experience.
Quite often (and not entirely by chance, I do this stuff for a living ;)) these pages perform well in search engines for company name and/or the relevant product/service. In some cases, this can have a fairly noticeable impact on the company concerned. It's rare that I post anything negative, so usually the good service I receive results in a higher conversion rate for the company (from those doing pre-purchase research), and targeted referrals for all concerned.
Anyone else spreading a little SEO karma? :)
I've found that people everywhere respond very well to unsolicited praise, and an email or two here and there to say 'thanks' is bound to add a smile to someone's day, even if you never get a reply.
I make a point to spread it around. This latest hosting company I'm with is a good example. Outstanding uptime, fast speed, almost instantaneous support when it's needed, which is rarely. I've been on some servers that were just really nightmares and my experience with these people has been the complete opposite. I let them know about it too. I sent them an email just last week telling them how totally pleased I was with their service. It had to do with nothing. I mean it was completely out of the blue. Just a simple, "I think you guys rock and have a good day."
I've worked tech support before. It's a thankless job. What you hear about are peoples problems and not much else. They're contacting you expecting you to fix something, or more often instruct them on how to use the service they've paid for, and once you've accomplished that you don't hear from them again. No "Thank you's," no "Job well done's," no nothing. They just disappear until there's another perceived problem. Rarely, and I mean very rarely, I'd get an unsolicited email from someone saying, "Hey, you guys are doing a great job. That's all I wanted to say." and I can't even begin to tell you how good that would make me feel.
So yeah, I spread it around. Whether there's any karmic implications I have no idea but I'd like to think there are.
