I'm not sure it's actually useful but it's pretty cool from a tech toys perspective.
They announced a conventional flat 'Microsoft Surface' computer a couple days ago as well. From what I gathered, taking a quick look, it uses infrared for tracking which means you can put the screen behind a clear cover like glass and still get functionality. It also means it can recognize objects placed onto the desktop.
One of those things you always wondered why no on has done yet :-)
Microsoft no doubt has some extrodinary things up their sleeve.
The only thing MSFT has up it's sleeve is capital.
Like everything else they didn't innovate, "surface computing" is another thing someone else developed and MSFT bought into once everyone went "oooohhh aaahhhh"...
Jeff Han at NYU was the primary developer of the multi-touch system now sold as "Microsoft Surface"...
