No Sound Windows XP IE7

Before you mention the obvious, the sound card is working because I can play sound with windows media player, both on the internal desktop speaker and external speakers.

What's not working are any windows sounds (they are all greyed out in that option to select the sound scheme). Going to a youtube video, the video runs, but there's no sound.

I went through all the obvious checks of making sure that in Internet Options of IE it was selected in "play sound in web pages"

I looked in the bios settings and that is unchanged.

I tried updating the sound driver, still no luck.

Any other pointers and ideas?

hehehe, I should think so! Watch out for flying objects. LOL If it were a browser problem, I would have done that a long time ago. ;)

Systems sounds don't play when logging in. When looking at the sound scheme, the files are there, but they are greyed out.

Those sound files should be located in C:\WINDOWS\Media folder, like "Windows Information Bar.wav". Are they there?

Yes, they are there, and if I play the files in media player, they run/sound just fine.

No, no sounds in any browser.

No system sounds, which I believe is a pointer.

Have you got a registry value of wavemapper => msacm32.drv in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32?

The short answer is no, that's not there.

Stupid suggestion, but I've seen it do this on it's own. Control Panel->Sounds and Audio Devices-> Mute unchecked?

It's a string value: add it in as per my post above and it may well fix your problem:

A new string called wavemapper with a value of msacm32.drv within HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32

Give that a go and see whether it works. A reboot after may be unneccessary but might be worth it in any case.

And of course, meddle with the registry at your own risk, backup etc. etc. ;)

I'm not quite sure of this, but try to go in Control Panel >> Appearance and Themes >> Sound Troubleshooter.

You have probably already done this, but if not, this may be worth a try.

Thanks all.

>Mute unchecked?

Yes, unchecked.

Edited the registry (after backing up and creating a restore point), and the sound has now returned.

Good find, and thanks.

Just spent about 2 hrs trying to figure out why I had no internet sound. Everything else was working fine and I browsed several forums looking for ideas/hints to try. I finally saw the regedit post and decided to give it a try. It worked great! I have no idea why the sound stopped but least now my little guy has sound on Disney.com again :)

This should do the trick:
[support.microsoft.com...]

Article is for Win2K, but also applies to Windows XP

Edit: oops, didn't realise that there were two pages... :/

Checked every string value as per Win2K article. No satisfaction. re-installed ie7 & media player. still no sound from web page. otherwise player working perfectly. Firefox also has no sound from webpage. So this is unique to webpages only.
Deleted corel draw, Adove Flash 9. No joy.

Any more ideas please.

Back again. Sounds now play in youtube for ie7 & firefox. But some websites do not play sound when it should. I downloaded K-lite codecs. This has not fixed the problem. These websites i accessed before were playing.
In building these websites i used to get sound also in preview mode.

any ideas please.

Hello Harun9:

Not that anyone's ignoring you. It's just that this forum is heavier on webmasters and lighter Windows techs. Perhaps a more Windows-centric forum might be more helpful.
