google on the local news

I was watching the local news tonight and they were talking about a fellow that was brought up on charges for making sexist remarks (we won't go on about that, against TOS [webmasterworld.com] and Charter [webmasterworld.com]) and the news anchor said you could go to google and search for sexist jokes and come up with a whole list of sites.

That was a very strange remark and only made me shake my head. It really might be becoming a household word.

Though the news was on in the background and I wasn't really watching. I was at my neighbours setting up their adsl and various other things. She brought it to my attention, possibly, because i had just answered the "what is a search engine" question. Also "what is a browser", "where do you get music", "why are those lights flashing" among others.

Interesting evening all around.

About 3 times per month on our local #1 morning radio talk show I hear "will you please Google that and find out for me?"

even some of the members here, refer to Google, as the be-all and end-all of the internet.

Yep. They've become the "Kleenex" of search. The use of their brand as being synonymous with search has gone mainstream here in the US.

The other night my husband was helping our son research a school project on the Internet. He said they couldn't find any more web sites on the topic. I asked if he tried some of the other search engines - and neither he nor my son could think of any besides Google. It's all they use these days.

Last year I volunteered to help teach computer classes at my kids' school in the computer center. I noticed that the *only* search engine covered in the Internet research part of the classes was Google.

Last week I was at a party and I was talking with someone who has been on the web running an online business since the mid-nineties. And he's been on the Internet from way back before the web came along.

He said he never uses Google - he doesn't worry about search engine marketing, obviously! He stuck with Alta Vista for all those years and considers Google a "college experiment".

Obviously a rare bird!

I have to admit it's a blast wearing a Google T-shirt out on errands. People ask if you really work there and seem to smile at me more. :)
