Why do rich-text editors suck?

I'm using too and they're a pain

I happily used a web authoring program to run my site for several years. I never anticipated the site's growth in size so navigation became unmanageable. I then hired someone to put my site into a content management system to improve navigation, etc.

The rich text editor has a mind of it's own, often throwing in extraneous code. Not sure it's fair to call it a WYSIWYG editor! The previous version of Tiny MCE was an absolute nightmare to use, so I guess I should be thankful for little things with the newer version.

I used a mail program for several years, too, and the editor worked like a dream; no problems. That was before CSS became so popular, when the table vs css debates were at their height. Then I just "had" to go out and have it upgraded. While the program truely has some nice new features, rich text editor in is a real pain too.

What's wrong with them? Are there any good rich text editors out there that are compatible with CMS?

You have a better chance asking this question here:

I'm a hand coder. I feel for you though.

No one replied to my inquiry in the other forum. When you wrote "I'm a hand coder. I feel for you though." perhaps that said it all.

There are no better editors, so I am stuck?!
