I had a similar experience once. A former schoolmate received an email from me about a year after I sent it. How this is technically possible I do not know.

During 9/11 an email of mine took a week to deliver but that all things consider was acceptable if a little odd, but this is really weird.

A possibility is a data restore that put old emails back into a queue. You can probably make a better guess depending on the organisation's email address/mail server.
Incidentally, don't suppose you remember if it was delivered the first time around?
