Had an email returned today sent 3 years ago.....

Maybe your ISP was bought out by the Post Office.

I would be glad if many of my emails from three years back were returned.

Did you travel back in time? :) I always knew this was possible

I had a similar experience once. A former schoolmate received an email from me about a year after I sent it. How this is technically possible I do not know.

maybe an email server was finally plugged back into the net and finished the job...

During 9/11 an email of mine took a week to deliver but that all things consider was acceptable if a little odd, but this is really weird.

A possibility is a data restore that put old emails back into a queue. You can probably make a better guess depending on the organisation's email address/mail server.

Incidentally, don't suppose you remember if it was delivered the first time around?
