OK, so I send out a few emails a day. Maybe a few dozen.

Just in the last 3 days I have run across numerous friends and clients who clearly did not receive emails that I sent. In the last few months it has happened enough times that I've noticed it.

One lost its way going across the pond, several were across town, others were practically across the street and I can replicate the problem when I send the mail to myself. Some are on the same ISP (C*mcast) some are not.

These clearly have not fallen into spam filters (although it does appear that is happing in an alarming fashion.)

Heaven help me if I try to speak to C*mcast about this.

I know it is a big technical magic act (hats off to the magicians!) that emails actually arrive to the extent that they do.

The vendors clearly have no clue about lost emails and seem like they could care less.

They actually asked me what port I was using. Like that's going to matter!

It is almost comical - now that we have come to depend on this tool, there is no way, other than an inane phone call, second email that says "did you get my email" or another elaborate scheme there seems to be nothing one can do about this hopefully momentary problem.

How do you track an email that never gets to its addressee?

Got any ideas?

How do you track an email that never gets to its addressee?

I request read receipts on all important email communications. I flag them in my Outlook and schedule a reminder and/or reminders (recurring).

We also ensure that our IP Blocks remain off the RBLs (Realtime Blackhole Lists). It is a daily process and one that is a pain in the arse. When you have thousands of email users, certain actions may cause you to be automatically added to the RBL. It's automated removal process but again, a pain in the arse!
