Telemarketers using DNS information?

My wife started a business and accidently used our home phone number in the DNS information. I quickly modified this within 24 hours but it was too late, telemarketers almost started calling immediately and haven't stopped since. When I ask them where they got the number, they say they got it from the telephone company, which is obviously a lie.

Is anyone else having this problem? Is there a law to prevent this? Our phone number is on the do-not-call list but that hasn't seemed to stop them.

Since the number is on the DNC list, I hope you are getting as much information from the companies when they call (company name, phone number, location, name of person calling, etc.)or at least the time of the call, and filing a complaint with the FTC for each one.

However, I think the DNC list is for residential numbers only, so if your wife uses the number for her business, that may negate some of the the protection afforded by the DNC list.

If you're on the do-not-call list I'd file a complaint.

Are you in the U.S? You may want to look into your state laws too. Pennsylvania was the first to enct this law it actually has teeth here:

Every telemarketer that calls consumers in Pennsylvania is required to purchase the list from the list administrator. The telemarketer must then remove every name on the "Do Not Call" list from their calling lists within 30 days of receiving the list. A violation of the law carries a civil penalty of up to $1,000, or $3,000 if the person contacted is age 60 or older.
