It does measure temperature, it's just not the primary function of this device.
It also measures sound.

Lapplanders now use this device connected to a large array to track migration patterns of caribou. It also measures the amount of methane generated by the herd and extrapolates the amount of global warming. Also comes in handy to scrape reindeer leavings off their muklucks.
