Just got a new laptop and looking for an Internet Safety suite, noticed there are quite a few: PC tools, Zonelab, Zone Alarm. What are you guys using? Are the pay software packages better than the free ones?

Thanks

i used to buy norton's package, and then mcafee, but i got fed up renewing them all the time so for the last year i've just been using windows vista's built-in firewall and defender program (for spyware), and downloaded the free avast! program for viruses.

i haven't had a single problem yet.

I do IT support, and find that if people are complaining their system is slow, they have Norton or Mcaffee installed.

People who complain they can't use MSN properly, or other connection issues have Zone Alarm installed.

People shouldn't be allowed to use firewall products unless they understand what a firewall is, how it works, and how to configure it manually.

That said, I have always used, and always recommend, Windows own firewall, Microsoft Defender for spyware (free download), and AVG anti-virus, also a free download.

Here's the links:

Windows Defender:
[microsoft.com...]

AVG Anti-Virus:
[free.grisoft.com...]

Hope that helps!

i would also recommend spybot search&destroy [spybot.info] and lavasoft ad-aware se [lavasoft.de] for spyware protection.

Kaspersky Internet Security - it's the best one I've ever used (and, like many people, I've used a lot of them). Always ranks high in comparisons.

NOD from ESET seems to be regarded by many as the best, or one of the best AV systems, and they just recently launched a brand new security suite.

I have not yet tried the suite but reviews so far seem to be positive, and if it is anything like NOD 32 then it will be a great success.

I used to use Avast (free)..Then while checking a site advertising on adWords(!) got infected by a trojan which gave me the blue screen of death. had to format.

Now I am using F-Secure. I like it.
