Without De La Hoya walking forward against Mayweather, there wouldn't have been a fight and nothing serious was ever landed by either fighter. I think Hatton is hungry enough to walk through whatever Mayweather can throw just to get a chance at knocking him out. Still, I think Mayweather is the best pound per pound fighter in the sport, though I hate that hackneyed phrase.
If the bout even comes close to the superb Pavlik victory over Taylor it will be well worth the PPV price. Will you be watching this Saturday?
Hatton has to go in hard and look to knock him out, he is a good body puncher and should be able to do it.
It's not worth placing a bet because the odds are too low but if you think Hatton will win it's worth betting that he will become the BBC Sports Personality Of The Year on Sunday night's live vote - Hatton is second favourite currently 5/2.
I might stick 50p or so on later when I'm at home on my own computer.
I do hope it finishes in a KO and not scores or a disqualification.
The build up is amazing! Thankfully, it will be at an ideal time for us all in Asia to watch!
OK, so what do I win?
I don't think that Mayweather will retire, he's 39-0. Ten more victories would put him on the pedestal with arguably the greatest fighter in history. Mayweather can't end up 49-0 with 43 knockouts, but tying the Brockton Brawler's win loss record would put the finishing touch on a fantastic career. Now if he would just adopt the meekness and humility that Marciano had. ;)
As for Lennox Lewis' suggestion that Hatton retire, sorry Lewis, but Hatton's defeat was more exciting than any of your victories.
I don't think so either, but there is no one to fight him right now. (Plus, 39-0 is just as good as 59-0 IMO)
Miguel Cotto is good, but not good enough. Nevertheless, they will fight and Mayweather will do it for a cool $10 mil plus promotion of his company. The good news is that Mayweather is still young and in 5 years many new talented boxers will emerge. Everyone of them will want to defeat the man. Look at de la Hoya, still fighitng here n'there; not for titles but for cash and name recognition. Floyd does not need any more titles...
De La Hoya made the Mayweather fight and Mayweather never landed a single significant punch in the entire fight. He was accurate, but with tapping punches with no power behind them.
I still think Mayweather is the better boxer, currently the best pound per pound boxer in the sport although Manny Pacquiao is a fine fighter as well.
Also recommend the famous Stanley Ketchel/Jack Johnson fight of 1908 on Youtube.
In 1915 Willard defeated Jack Johnson in 26 rounds outdoors at Havana in July. Temperature 103 degrees!
My God, how some of those boxers suffered in the ring!
