Hi,

me and some of my friends are starting a new business. But we have a problem: how to name a new company?

It's going to be about IT and other computer services, programming, open-source, servers, cross platforms... We've come up with "itea", but it's already taken.

So, can you give me as much suggestions as possible? The name should mean something, something regarding our philosophy of the business. I'm also looking for the next phrases in as many languages as possible (can be languages, not anymore spoken or not widely spoken or so):

- knowledge
- openness
- idea

Please try to explain what a suggested name means. Anything would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

Make a list of the main things your customers would want from you. Then try combining those words.

Example:
Open Source
Programming
SEO
Linux

Results:
LinuxOpen
Pronux
OpenSEO
Sourcegramming

Give a little more info about what kind of company it plans to be, and maybe more ideas will flow?

Just keep writing words.

My company is simply an expression of what we do which is help people, or ourselves achieve their purpose, hence Purpose Inc.

At the same time I would start a computer company using terms that will be timeless, or plan on re-naming it in a few years.

5 years from now will Linux or Open Source still be commonly used terms? How bout a word like info?

What if you were naming a company where people would go and oggle something? Would you name it Go Oggle?

No name suggestion, however an old time B&M merchant told me once to have the
name say or implies the business you are in. Customers shouldn't have to guess what your about.

Only big companies are able to spend the money to build the brand names from obscure monikers like Enron, Esso and of course Google & Yahoo...KF

My background is in marketing and brand management, and personally I'm against names that sound like what the company does.

For two reasons

1) They can be limiting e.g. "Acme Goat Herders" this company might in 5 years time want to move into Road Haulage or Scone Making. Would you buy scones from a Goat Herding company?

2) Unless it is a very clever name it will soon become "naff" and you and your customers will become bored with it.

Far better in my opinion to use an impressive sounding but "meaning neutral" name and a descriptive strap-line. The strap-line can be changed as your markets change, and different strap-lines can be used for different market segments and company divisions.

e.g.

Quantum
A leap forward in IT management

Quantum
Specialised Architectural Software

Quantum
On-line Dried Flower Arrangements

etc.
