I've never experienced an MP3 player, but everyone on my train seems to have one.

What is the quality like for classical music?
If it varies depending on player - what players are recommended?
What are good quality 'in-ear' type earbuds that would reproduce classical music well? (I don't think I want those 'dorky' large earphones...)

Well I'm not particularly into classical music, but I wouldn't be without my mp3 player - invaluable for long bus/train rides or such, especially after a stressful day when you want to relax.

Mine does have settings for pop, rock, classical which I think act like a basic graphic equalizer thingummy.

Mine's a cheapo model though (around £20), and although it's quite adequate I'm sure that The more expensive and well know brands would give better sound quality.

I have those little in-ear headphones, the cheap ones which came with it (do you see a theme occuring here?) but they're not the most comfortable. I imagine those 'dorky' ones are probably better, but not great for carrying around in your pocket.

I'm sure you used to be able to get in ear ones with a spongey bit, and they were more comfortable but I haven't seen them for a few years.

I have some classical on my iPOD. It's usually not the player that matters but the bitrate of the MP3 (I'd recommend 128 minimum but 256 is much better (but a much larger file size)) and the quality of the speakers.

I can play it at work and it sounds like crap because I have very cheap speakers but when I get home it sounds great on my nice speaker set.
