To Shave or Not to Shave?

That is the question.

After being clean shaven for all these many years, I am now considering growing
a beard and a mustache.

My questions are for all you more hirsute fellows out there.

1. Does it itch?
2. Is it hard to keep clean?
3. How often do you have to trim it?
4. Do the ladies think its sexy?
5. If it comes in grey, will it make me look older?
6. What is the most popular model U.S. Grant, Abe Lincoln, Van Dyke,
Santa Claus, others?

My wife thinks the whole idea is hair-larious. Thanks!...KF

PS. I would also like to hear the opinions of all you ladies, beard or none?

Beards are distinguishing. Men get distinguished as they age, women just ... age...

In my country its the month of "Movember" when males are encouraged to grow a mo' as a prostate awareness campaign.

The right beard on the right guy is VERY sexy.

My husband has always had a neatly trimmed full beard, except for a brief period when he shaved it on a bet as part of a charity fundraising stunt.

He thought about keeping it off but it drove him nuts having to shave every day so he let it grow back. I was glad because I liked him better with it.

1. Does it itch?

You, no. Other who hit the stubble, maybe.

2. Is it hard to keep clean?

Shampoo like hair. Of course, if you are a slob, then chunks of General Gao's Chicken may collect between lunch and next shower, (hence the name "snack saver").

3. How often do you have to trim it?

"Have to" --- never, more a personal grooming choice -- although, like sideburns, trimming may result in lopsided appearance until someone points it out, or you tilt you head a little more to one side than the other.

4. Do the ladies think its sexy?

Gotta ask them -- although I have seen personal ads that indicate a 50/50 split, between "love guys with full beards" and "prefer clean-shaven, sorry beardo"

5. If it comes in grey, will it make me look older?

Yes --- and worse, if it's grey, the longer the beard gets the older you look. (On the other side, you can shave the whole thing off every once in a while and people will tell you how much younger you look).

6. What is the most popular model U.S. Grant, Abe Lincoln, Van Dyke, Santa Claus, others?

Don't know, and you left out a lot of others--- the Z.Z.Top beard, the metrosexual pencil line border, the Amish everything but a moustache (I think that was what Lincoln sported, but his was too scraggly to look Amish), then you got your butcher style mutton chops, the Frank Zappa mustache and lower lip strip, the chin braid, and so many more.

I knew there had to be one... [beards.org...]

My other half is forbidden to shave (although trims are allowed - he does get a bit fluffy :))
Only thing worse would be if he cut his hair! Heaven forbid! ;)

kf:

i used to grow and shave seasonally.
i gave up shaving but i keep it trimmed. (weekly or monthly)

i shaved my beard last week for the first time in more than 12 years for a sheik yerbouti costume.
it's almost back to normal...

That brings us to the concept of being half-shaved.

1. Does it itch?

Mine didn't.
2. Is it hard to keep clean?

Mine wasn't.
3. How often do you have to trim it?

I didn't.
4. Do the ladies think its sexy?

Mine didn't.
5. If it comes in grey, will it make me look older?

In general; yes. Unless your head-hair is white, in which case grey might make you look younger.
6. What is the most popular model U.S. Grant, Abe Lincoln, Van Dyke, Santa Claus, others?

I favour any natural style (i.e. growth where it grows), variation is by length. Can't stand 'designer beards'.

I should of known that

Actually, I think most people are more familiar with either Sheriff or Constable. I really do not know when the term 'police officer' first came into being. It's been a l o n g time since I attended the police academy where they teach that stuff. Though Sheriff comes from the UK Shire-reeve. But me thinks we're getting off topic.

Once a week I use scissors to keep the 'tash out of my food and have the barber trim it when I have a haircut. I have gone through several sets of electric clippers, either I am doing something wrong in looking after them or they have a high failure rate.

Cleaning - soap and water or shampoo depending on length between trims.

Sexy? Well I don't complain about the amount of female attention that I get although my girlfriend does!

Whan I was much much younger I grew (sort of) a moustache. It was white and not very thick. A girl I briefly dated told me it looked like a caterpillar on my lip.

Is it hard to keep clean?

please do, nothing grosser than having something stuck in a beard from lunch last week. Probably depends on what kind of beard you plan to have, granolacrunchy kind, or trimmedmanicuredlawn kind

Do the ladies think its sexy?

Stay away from my beard!

KF, one question you forgot to ask.

Does it reach an optimum length, and then stops growing?

I think mine has. It's grown as far as the bottom of my sternum and won't go any farther. So much for the ZZ Top beard.

Shaving will take years off of your appearance, growing facial hair will add years to it. I saw it on Oprah, so I know it's true. (actually, my wife saw it on Oprah and mentioned it to me. I was in a 'just for kicks' mood that day so I shaved my moustach off completely. I think it did take a couple of years off me.).

About 20 years ago, I went through the "I hate shaving" routine so grew a beard, after a few months it got itchy and irritated me so for a laugh, I shaved the left portion of the mustache and the right portion of the beard, was a good chuckle seeing people look twice.

A moustache: nobody has a nose thats that important it needs to be underlined!

I shaved my moustache off once. It threw my head so far off balance I couldn't even walk straight.

Never again.

1. Does it itch?

When it's coming in it might. Also depends on how far back you grow it from the chin. Too much growth under the neck and buttons, shirt collars, etc, tend to pull.

2. Is it hard to keep clean?

Not unless you find yourself in general, hard to keep clean.

3. How often do you have to trim it?

Depends on how fast it grows and what you want it to look like.

4. Do the ladies think its sexy?

Depends on the lady. I've been told that the beard and mustache go well with a cowboy hat.

5. If it comes in grey, will it make me look older?

Yep.

6. What is the most popular model U.S. Grant, Abe Lincoln, Van Dyke,
Santa Claus, others?

No clue, but then again, i don't worry much about popularity.

A good beard and mustache trimmer will work wonders for keeping it the preferred length. Once you find the lines you like it's a pretty easy routine. If you want a neat, orderly mustache, get used to combing it. (I don't) ;) But after having a mustache goatee combo for years and years, the combing before the trim keeps it in order.

<added />

First time it comes in, it might be a little patchy. Shave the whole thing off and start over until it the patches vanish. I had a full beard at 14. At 14 I didn't care if I looked older. At 42, I still don't care...

>>... resisting temptation ... must not rise to bait ... must not reply ...

LOL Well, some women grow a mustache when they get older...

I, and my skin, both hate shaving. At the moment I sport a month-and-a-half full beard, but some time this weekend, I'll switch to a Van Dyke. I'm either clean (being presentable), full beard (being lazy) or with Van Dyke (being menacing). So, with that background...

A question asked

> 1. Does it itch?

No more than anywhere else on my body.

Posted in Foo

> 2. Is it hard to keep clean?

Usually, food makes it into my mouth, so below the lips - no problem. As for above, after a certain amount of growth the 'stasche will sponge-up tea, requiring a post-sip blotting or licking (I'll admit) - see next question. I also suffer what I call the "Velco Effect." Living with 3 cats & a long-haired girlfriend means, come morning, I have to occasionally comb out their lint (but I do have a hair-free pillow!).

A beard or not

> 3. How often do you have to trim it?

When I can lick a sip of tea out of my 'stasche (about two months growth), or, far more importantly, when kissing the girlfriend and she says, "OUCH! You're prickly!" (That's a period of three or four days after about three weeks of growth.)

What to do?

> 4. Do the ladies think its sexy?

Mine does, and that's all that matters to me. Apparently, with my shaved head, many ladies - and a few men - find me to be muy caliente. :o

Comments requested

> 5. If it comes in grey, will it make me look older?

I'm blond, no concerns there. But facial hair always adds age; gray moreso. (I'm sure many of us can relate a story where when we were underage, we'd send the guy with the most facial hair to the beer store to hopefully score...)

But ladies are craved

> 6. What is the most popular model U.S. Grant, Abe Lincoln, Van Dyke, Santa Claus, others?

Personal tastes, social status, current age, the environment, cultural influences, type of employment, lifestyle choices... Just a few factors that dictate (or influence) personal style.

Imagine George Bush with a "soul patch," Osama bin Laden with a handlebar 'stasche, the Pope with a Van Dyke or goatee. A "ZZ Top" beard in the tropics. Chipping ice out of your 'stasche in the far north or south. Full-bearded Goths and clean-shaved Sikhs...

Perhaps he should have

> a mustache goatee combo

AKA a Van Dyke (van Dyke/Van Dyck)... ;)

> soul patch

AKA a missed spot... ;)

Burma-Shaved!
