My first trip to California since I was a kid and I have been hearing for years that In and Out is the best. So I had a chance to partake.
We were very impressed.
The fries .. not so much.
Just hoping that one day they expand in our direction. You folks are lucky out there.
And next time, asked for a Double Double with grilled onions. Makes all the difference in the world.
Fuddruckers is ok, but not in In and Out's league.
They also have a "secret menu" that is not posted anywhere in their locations, but regulars know about it.
Basically it is:
Double Meat - similar to a Double Double but without the cheese
Grilled Cheese - basically a Double Double without the meat
3x3 - a double with an extra patty
4x4 - a double with two extra patties
Protein Style - no bun, any burger is all wrapped in lettuce
Animal Style - with the patties cooked in mustard sauce, extra spread, grilled onions and pickle added to any burger
they do everything old school there.
food is all prepared on site - you see whole potatoes, heads of lettuce, etc.
make mine a double double, animal style and fries, burnt...
You have to order a double patty to get enough meat. It is as good as you are
going to get in their price bracket. There are plenty of better burgers, Rubys,
Fud-Ruckers, Tuesdays and others but you have to spend $5.00 or more to get
them. Another good hamburger is Fat Burger out of Santa Monica, CA.
I am sure all parts of the country have their favorite burger joint too...KF
That's always been something I've believed would be a real market success if only because it would be popular with both children and their parents...
Had a McDonalds burger the other day, first time in a few years, and from the quality it'll be the last time in a few years as well.
The zen of the In and Out burger is that it is greater then the sum of its parts.
The bun is toasted, the cheese is actually melted and literally embeds itself on to the meat. The lettuce and tomatoes are very cold and the grilled onions are practically caramelized.
The sauce is kind of a 1000 Island derivative.
I know people buy them and take them home or on planes, but the best way to eat them is there, at the restaurant.
They are all cooked to order so it takes a while to get your food, but it is hot, the cheese is gooey and the whole thing just comes together very well.

Could not agree more.
In Bangkok a Mos Burger recently opened which serves excellent fast food burgers (originally from Japan I believe).
I have to admit I enjoy watching the TV programmes about the food in the US, some of the hot dogs and burgers look great, even though they may take me 2 sittings to actually finish one.
How much is an In and Out Burger?

That's interesting about the distance from the office... I have never heard of that before.
Here's another bit of trivia, the owners are very religious, if you look through their packaging, you can find hidden biblical references. Two examples I can think of are on the bottom of the drink cups inside the rim, and on the bottom of the bags the fries come in.
Company policy is great too. Family owned, pay well with benefits and actually have happy people there most of the time. They have so far refused to compromise certain things for just profit.
