Had my first In and Out Burger last week .. actually I had 2! Double Doubles .. yum.

My first trip to California since I was a kid and I have been hearing for years that In and Out is the best. So I had a chance to partake.

We were very impressed.

The fries .. not so much.

Just hoping that one day they expand in our direction. You folks are lucky out there.

Rugles, the fries take a bit getting used to, but they really grow on you...

And next time, asked for a Double Double with grilled onions. Makes all the difference in the world.

Fuddruckers is ok, but not in In and Out's league.

They also have a "secret menu" that is not posted anywhere in their locations, but regulars know about it.

Basically it is:

Double Meat - similar to a Double Double but without the cheese

Grilled Cheese - basically a Double Double without the meat

3x3 - a double with an extra patty

4x4 - a double with two extra patties

Protein Style - no bun, any burger is all wrapped in lettuce

Animal Style - with the patties cooked in mustard sauce, extra spread, grilled onions and pickle added to any burger

I'm going to have to place my vote for Fuddruckers. In and Out is good, but Fuddruckers' buns are superior, and you can choose your toppings.

Plus, you can get a 1lb burger and not have to chase 4 slippery patties around.

Mmmmmm... Meat...

My vote for In-n-Out for take-out/drive through. For sit down, I can go either way (although haven't been to a Fuddruckers in years.

Actually, haven't been to an In-n-Out for probably close to a year as well... I've somehow really cut out the red meat lately and didn't even realize it.

nothing beats the in'n'out urge for the in'n'out burger.
i have debarked from many flights out of lax with a passenger carrying a bag of in'n'out.
the bag usually gets handed over to the subject before hugs and greetings are exchanged.
(usually it's for a so cal expat or a student away at school being visited by friends or parents)

they do everything old school there.
food is all prepared on site - you see whole potatoes, heads of lettuce, etc.

make mine a double double, animal style and fries, burnt...

Its OK, but I have had better. The meat is good but the paddy is way too thin.

You have to order a double patty to get enough meat. It is as good as you are

going to get in their price bracket. There are plenty of better burgers, Rubys,

Fud-Ruckers, Tuesdays and others but you have to spend $5.00 or more to get

them. Another good hamburger is Fat Burger out of Santa Monica, CA.

I am sure all parts of the country have their favorite burger joint too...KF

Not to poo on your burger-liciousness, but I haven't had a single fast-food entree since I watched Fast Food Nation last year. It changed me. This from a B.K. addict. :-)

I'm interested by this 'In and Out Burger'; having neither seen nor heard of them in Kuala Lumpur. Do they give you the 'trucker café' quality of burger (fresh bread with some substance, thick high-beef-content burger, and real chunky chips instead of fries)?

That's always been something I've believed would be a real market success if only because it would be popular with both children and their parents...

Had a McDonalds burger the other day, first time in a few years, and from the quality it'll be the last time in a few years as well.

vince,

The zen of the In and Out burger is that it is greater then the sum of its parts.

The bun is toasted, the cheese is actually melted and literally embeds itself on to the meat. The lettuce and tomatoes are very cold and the grilled onions are practically caramelized.

The sauce is kind of a 1000 Island derivative.

I know people buy them and take them home or on planes, but the best way to eat them is there, at the restaurant.

They are all cooked to order so it takes a while to get your food, but it is hot, the cheese is gooey and the whole thing just comes together very well.

Thanks for all the replies,

Yes, I did know about the "secret menu". I just focused on the main menu this time.

I am going to be in "In and Out" land in the near future, the grilled onions are going to be tested out. I will report back.

Oh, Fuddruckers.

Yes, I have been there. I love it too. No drive through that I remember and they used to be up here.

Is In And Out a local thing specific to an area of the country? We do have a great burger place, much better than Fudd's but only available in this corner of the US (a pretty big corner).

Currently, they are located in California, Arizona and Nevada. They started in Southern California.

For more, search for in and out in G.

Could not agree more.

In Bangkok a Mos Burger recently opened which serves excellent fast food burgers (originally from Japan I believe).

I have to admit I enjoy watching the TV programmes about the food in the US, some of the hot dogs and burgers look great, even though they may take me 2 sittings to actually finish one.

How much is an In and Out Burger?

In and Out very reasonable. Same price as MacD's or cheaper.

I understand that each store has to be within a days drive of the head office in SoCal. Hence the reason its only in a few states.

Rugles,

That's interesting about the distance from the office... I have never heard of that before.

Here's another bit of trivia, the owners are very religious, if you look through their packaging, you can find hidden biblical references. Two examples I can think of are on the bottom of the drink cups inside the rim, and on the bottom of the bags the fries come in.

In N Out Burger is my favorite. Only fast food I go to now. Nothing is frozen. The fries are freshly cut moments before frying and not coated in sugar like other big chains. So they improve each time you eat them and get used to the fresh again.

Company policy is great too. Family owned, pay well with benefits and actually have happy people there most of the time. They have so far refused to compromise certain things for just profit.

I haven't had a single fast-food entree since I watched Fast Food Nation last year.

That thing makes you regret what you have been eating till you came to know the 'truth'.

In and Out seems interesting, but sadly it is not in my reach.

pay well with benefits and actually have happy people there most of the time.

That was exactly my experience at the two restaurants I visited. Happy people working hard.

Very refreshing for a fast food joint.
