Howling At the Moon

Fess up: Have you cut loose a bona fide howl in the last year or two?

I confess. Don't ask me why but, from time to time, I feel a rather strong compulsion to howl - loudly and publicly - at the moon. Not frequently. Not indiscriminately. I really don't want to scare the neighbors. Some of the dogs love it, though, and I love it when they "get it".

Yes, sadly, it's true. I've lost my grip of reality, which means that sometimes, when the moon is full and bright, it just feels right to cut loose a lupine serenade.

And, no, alcohol isn't always involved, but yes, I do have a few howling buddies. Mostly they're avowed or wannabe wicca, so it doesn't faze them. Stranger truths about myself shall not be revealed.

Stranger truths about myself shall not be revealed.

A wise decision.

I can't say that I've howled at the moon, but there have been more than a few nights when I've drummed all night, basking in the light of the full moon. Noise is noise.

And why shouldn't you? Sometimes we need to go back to our primal instincts.

I really don't want to scare the neighbors.

That sounds like you have already got a few neighbors scared. :)

'Honey, it is him again. Go back to sleep'

Isn't there a song 'Howling At the Moon'?

Maybe this is the REAL reason you howl at the moon>

I admit it: At times I feel more at home with dogs than with humankind. At the very least, they're just less complicated. Eat, hunt, play, snooze. I could go for a month of that. ;)

The howling impulse is probably consistent with my hope that there's a dog heaven and with my sense that, given a choice, choosing to spend eternity in dog heaven vs. people heaven wouldn't be all that bad a choice.

Besides, somebody in dog heaven has to throw the stick or ball, and rub all those furry heads, ya know?

I volunteer. ;)

That was so important it was worth saying three times? ;)

If your connection slows down, wait, don't hit submit 2-3 more times. :-D

Back on topic, I agree, dogs are much easier than humans to deal with. No hidden agenda and almost no deception.

Wow, or perhaps bow-wow?

Sorry, I've got a bit of a buggy PC that has been stacking instances of certain processes, which then overloads the PC's CPU and causes IE7 to hang, which in turn has been causing pages to fail to load.

Guess that submit button really did work the first time? ;-/

I've never howled at the moon, but I used to sing with one of my dogs. She recognized "our" songs and would try to match the pitch and rhythm of certain tunes (I have a very convincing recording of her doing this). She also had her own favorite "melodies". I'll never forget the first time I stopped what I was singing and echoed back one of "her" songs - she was so excited, FINALLY the stupid human got it!

None of my dogs before or after have done that - I miss her ...

LOL. Too funny.
Do you get sent to the doghouse afterwards too?

Why do dogs howl? In our family they say that dogs howl whenever someone dies in the family? Anyone heard this?

That's one of the many reasons. They're sad, they're communicating, they're joining in.

I can howl at my collie and he'll start to howl, too.
