Search engine pioneer Google offers its engineers the freedom to "pursue products they are passionate about" for a full 20% of their time - the equivalent to one working day a week. Giving staff time to think creatively can pay dividends [personneltoday.com]

This is one of the things I want to do if I happen to own a good sized company.

What would you like to build into your existing or upcoming culture? Or something interesting you have already implemented?

Hab, Are you sure your not already spending 20% of your time pursuing other interest?

I know I am. Of course I happen to work for a very benevolent boss...me!

That is for sure. The time I spend on WebmasterWorld alone could be a bit beyond that figure.

Culture building into a company doesn't seem an easy thing. How you deal with the first employee could be how you are going to deal for years to come without knowing what exactly to change. You can learn new things and change on the process, but there should be few things which you might need to have to build a solid foundation of culture.

Has anything impressed you from the jobs you have had that you really want to have when your business grows beyond what it is now?

The best thing to have is a boss who has only minimal respect for seniority and management structures. That means a boss who will seek out the opinion of those at all levels; and if he likes an idea he'll tell everyone to run with it, whether it came from the coffee boy or the product innovation director. I'm trying to keep that in mind as I grow my business.

Things that are on the purchase/do list:

  • Coffee machine
  • Fridge
  • Weekly beer and curry for Friday lunchtimes
  • Stereo system hooked up to MP3
  • Ban on overtime

I think that a Google-culture is way beyond my aims though; would be nice, but the expense would be crippling for my business model.
