A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

"I woke up because the pain was unbearable," Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.

A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead

(Note to self: avoid being declared dead in Venezuela.)
Please tell me the guy's first words were "I'm not dead yet!" :)

Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events
Hospital probably had an unlisted phone number so the Great Reuters just printed the story anyway.

Seems unlikely they would rush an autopsy after a car crash. Would they start with the face? Hey, I've seen those TV shows; always start with the chest.

Showed a scar as proof. But HE WAS in a bad car accident.

Send this to all your friends. LOL

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband's body only to find him moved into a corridor -- and alive.

The article doesn't say whether she was sad, or happy, to find her husband in the corridor.

I wonder if the paramedic who responded to the accident feels really dumb about now? Hope he at least said OOPS!

Ooops, too late. Already in Google 17,000 times. Some others (not enough) are doubting this story.

He was in "unbearable pain." Yeah, most people are after a bad car crash.

Already in Google 17,000 times.

...now at 57,700...

Here's the original story from the cited newspaper - El Universal [buscador.eluniversal.com] - complete with pic of the "dead man" holding what is purported to be the autopsy documentation...

Anyone understand Spanish? :-)

Would they start with the face?

The eyes. They were going to remove them for transplant.

OK are you feeling even more queasy now?! ;)

I know of two people who have died and come back to life. One, a school friend of mine father drowned and woke up in the morgue; the other, a current friend of mine died in hospital only to recover later. It's obviously not that rare. Which is very scary....

That makes for a better urban legend. Not an autopsy (which would kill him quickly) but an eye transplant.

HE WAKES UP AND BOTH EYES ARE GONE, bought by famous computer magnate who is secretly going blind.

1st paragraph, mas ó menus....

The forensic doctors where ready to get to work with a saw in their hands and their eyes on their victim (sic). Before opening the man's chest, the doctor noticed a vital reaction in one of the bodyparts. After the shock of noticing how the dead guy was looking at her, she raised the alarm and called the 'quirófano and they resusitated him.

Not only that but he was robbed of 600,000 bolivars (about 280 dollars), his identity chain and even his wedding ring. His injured friend was robbed of 200,000 bolivars and his watch and he was just injured!
It isn't stated who did the robbing....

Apparantly the traffic police and CP people just loaded his body on a stretcher and without looking too closely pronounced him dead. They immediately notified his wife!

Funny how Google translated that first para

The forenses doctors arranged themselves to initiate their work with the mountain range in the hand and the eyes put on the body of the victim. Before opening the chest of the man, the doctor noticed that she had had a vital reaction in a member of his body. After the scare to see how the dead watched it, she made the call of alert so that they transferred it to the operating room and they revived it
