If a person wipes their hard drive clean and does a re-install of Windows, does it also wipe the registry clean?

Theres a person having trouble with computer freezes, sluggishnish and other problems. They have 1 gig of ram, they have shut down all extra programs that may be running on the side and using resources, they have ran spy ware and all the latest virus and clean-up software but their computer is still acting crazy.
I think the problem is in their registry because of all the crappy programs they have installed.

[disclaimer]Without physically being there, only the Great Carnac would be able to accurately provide an answer for you :-)[/disclaimer]

Short answer: Yes, absolutely, and you may even be getting corrupted registry entries form any install disks you have.

Long answer, let me relate a similar experience. Two years ago I bought a brand new IBM tower (always a fan of IBM boxes, second only to scratch built.) Fresh out of the box this appeared to be the Worst Computer Ever. I was baffled. My affection for IBM was taking a serious hit.

After loooooong hours of digging around I discovered what you are saying was exactly the case - but it wasnt's an IBM problem. It was a Norton problem.

This box came with "restore" disk. I reformatted, reinstalled, same issues. After hours of digging through the registry, I found many Symantic registry entries completely corrupted, they were total gibberish. This, of course, rendered any Symantec uninstall scripts worthless. Tried manual removal. Still no love.

Off I went to Staples for a new XP Pro disk. Erased and formatted this hard drive, installed fresh without all the Symantec garbage - which is EXACTLY what it is - installed Grisoft AVG and a few other spyware apps. This comp is now the best one I've ever owned. I've had absolutely no significant problems in two years.

Thanks for the reply.

Symantec garbage < This I knew

Now tell me if McAfee is garbage. I have run AVG before and Panda and Symantec.

Let me see if this person runs Symantec or not. It's worth a shot.

Now if I can just find a decent host for my small handfull of clients.
