Yahoo Photos, a popular online photo-hosting site, is shutting down on Sept. 20, after which any images stored there will head into photo oblivion. Until then, you can buy a CD of your images or download them for free to your desktop. You can also move them to one of five suggested photo-hosting sites

A lesson learnt, imho, use of online-hosted services comes with the risk of removal of the service.

They are providing an option to move to one of the "other options". Well, I don't think I am moving them anywhere. May be just download them.

A link in the above Washington Post story that should take you to more information from Yahoo about this change actually sends you to a AT&T/Yahoo help page that has nothing to do with Yahoo! Photos shutting down.

Here is a link [help.yahoo.com] with extensive information on the shutdown.

Q: Why is it closing?

A: For some time now we’ve supported two great photo sharing services, Yahoo! Photos and Flickr. But even good things come to an end, and we’ve decided to focus all our efforts on Flickr – the award winning photo sharing site that Time Magazine has even called “completely addictive.”

Can't say I'm surprised; in fact, what took them so long? Acquisitions that result in service duplication means wasted resources. What does surprise me is that there isn't an automatic migration to Flicker.

All of my pictures are on my computer (and backed up to a second drive). Any photos posted online are just for the convenience of family and friends.
