Shooting stars are set to grace the night sky with a spectacular light display this weekend.

The annual Perseid meteor shower will reach its peak during the early hours of Monday, but it will be visible from Saturday night until Tuesday morning.

The celestial show will be most apparent in the north-eastern part of the sky near the Perseus constellation.

I hope it's going to be clear, but looking at the weatherforecast where I live, rain is due on Sunday.

Lucky me! I'll be leaving the pea soup of Los Angeles (Stars? What are those) and spending Saturday above 5,000 feet and away from the lights of 14 million people; if it is a good show this year it will be great viewing.

Some years it is really great, other years it is lame. Looking forward to it again!

The best viewing is after midnight, perfect for trogdolytic computer geeks accustomed to such hours.

Don't forget the full lunar eclipse on the 28th:

The Perseids are supposed to be faint and on the horizon this year down here in the Southern Hemisphere :(
The lunar eclipse promises to be good, though - we're planning a trip out with the local flickerites for that, although I will probably get stuck home with the kids :(

stuck home with the kids

Kids know and love the moon, and if there are any around during an eclipse I make an event of it. Right before totality, put on Pink Floyd and get everyone singing, "I'll see you on the dark side of the moon!"

We were lucky where I live: The sky was clear and I managed to spot a few.

It's cloudy today, so little chance of seeing anymore tonight.

A few years ago I went to Frasier Park to view the Perseid meteor shower and the place was mobbed. Imagine 200 people packed into an area that was designed for 100. I hope you found a better place than I did!

the sky was clear, moon was (nearly) new, and it was a beautiful dark night. at midnight we drove about 40 minutes out of town to an extra-dark place, threw down a couple of lawn chairs and watched the show until 2. glorious!

I was in Wisconsin (Door County) for a wedding Saturday night and saw some. The Milky Way was absolutely dazzling from there. Back in Houston, we don't see much - too many city lights :(
