Saw a TV documentary on rogue asteroids striking the earth. Scary as hell!
I don't think "duck and cover" will work on this one!

I have two questions. Would or could we survive it or would it put us back to single cell amoebae crawling out of the seas?

And is there anyway to prevent them from crashing into us? Nuclear warheads
mounted on intercepting rockets. etc etc? KF :=(

Yeah just like we should not worry about the ozone layer and global warming - what kind of fools are they - guess they just find it amusing. :-D

Earth's magnetic poles reverse on the order of once every 250,000 years. We're way overdue for a flip because it's been something like 700,000 years since the last flip. There is also a growing consensus amongst scientists that Earth will be flipping within the next 10,000 years or so. :)

There's a great series of articles about this subject on the NOVA website at PBS. Google magnetic pole reversal.

The journal "Nature" also had a recent article about this and its devastating consequences. Look for the article titled "Magnetic Pole Reversal and its Effect on the Human Sense of Feng Shui" at www.yourlegpulledhereforfree.com

I try to remain positive when thinking about this stuff. But I'm prepared to be negative on a moments notice.

The Y2K millenium bug did it for me and doomsday predictions.
And don't tell me that "we fixed the problem" because the deadline wasn't met. The world's code wasn't updated in time, and yet, strangely, civilization didn't crumble.

My understandng of the Y2K thing was that it was perpetuated, enhanced, multiplied and exaggerated 4 or 5 times by programmers trying to scratch out a couple more months of job security.

At this point, and I emphasize that.. at this point it's going to take a bit more than a computer glitch to take the world down. Tomorrow maybe - but not right now.

not by programmers, or at least not by the ones actually doing the recoding work. It was perpetuated by self-styled 'experts' and prophets of doom. The media bought it completely, and governments and corporations poured vast amounts of money into trying to stop the catastrophe.
I don't remember a single person in the media saying "Y2K? nothing to worry about!"
It was all nerdy bearded guys talking about date registers and system crashes and error amplification.
They were wrong.

We get to learn proper English (it should be 'a large asteroid' not 'an')

Other than that, who knows. Who cares?

Sunday 12th August between the hours of 11pm and 2am - the UK will have a meteor shower show.

Loads of shooting stars to make plenty of wishes

That's subtle but still hilariously funny. :)

BTW, it's not like I spend every waking moment thinking of all the what ifs when it comes to nature. Frankly I have enough trouble keeping track of all the what ifs in my software applications, LOL. ;)

I was watching the History channel the other night and heard that according to the Decoded part of the Mayan Calendar all the flipping and world destruction will occur in 2214 (I think).

Ho hum so what else is new? It is certainly something mere mortals cannot do anything about.

Pass me a seven and coke along with my laptop and I will go out blurry eyed and relaxed....hehe

>>Are we All Doomed!?

Yes, it's called mortality.

>>What happens if a large Asteroid hits the earth?

What ifs cover a lot of ground. Empty your golden glasses to the dregs... ; )

The way I see it, we humans will annihilate ourselves way before the big one hits. But before that, we'll have inhabited outerspace as biologically modified beings, true hybrids of technology and biomatter. This future form of human will inevitably break the space/time fabric and travel back in time, entering in through laylines to try and tell us of our impeding doom. These signals today manifest as cattle mutilations, UFO's, Stone Hedge, Pyramids, Crop Circles, etc. But perhaps long ago, they were presented more forcibly, giving us our variety of religions. The messages will continue, more subtly over time, until we are led to a final understanding that the future has already happened.
