$150 laptop

Not the OLPC project, either

No, not the green crank-up laptop, but a real computer with reasonably livable specs. More info here:

Somehow this just seems too good to be true. I mean, it's no killer machine, but even so, it seems like too much to expect for $150. The real problem for me is the "six to eight weeks for delivery" thing. If it's a scam, eight weeks is a lot of time to collect $150 orders!

Overall, I'm not sure if I should take a chance and get one while the gettin's good, or wait it out and see what happens to the folks who have already plunked down their cash.

Slashdot dissection of this story seems to indicate a scam.

Looks shady to me. Their contact page only has an email and it says, "The phone lines are temporarly closed".

The site was just registered on 2007-04-11 and the registrant is using a Hotmail address.

I never thought to check the domain registration. [smacks forehead] To me, though, the biggest red flags are still the price and the shipping time. I've seen lots of legitimate, corporate domains with similar registration details, but a laptop with these specifications for that price and with free shipping, well, it just doesn't wash.

However, the site is actually very well done. The graphics are relatively slick, and they don't promise the moon. The specs are just low enough to make you wonder...could it be for real? ;)

Whether this one is a hoax or not, three very real products have emerged this year:

1) OLPC "$100 laptop" - Current Retail Price: $176

2) Intel Classmate laptop - Current Retail Price: $200

3) Asus Eee PC - Current Retail Price: $199

Both the latter two appear to have been inspired by Negroponte's project.

A new dawn for low cost computing?
