We started talking about Flash and how cool it seemed to be. He said it would be great if I could do something like that. I told him I could never do a site that cool.
He said, "Why not?"
Not really advice, and I never got heavy into Flash, but I can trace my self taught web knowledge (from which I make a very decent living) back to that moment.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.

Father
Its not time to make a change,
Just relax, take it easy.
Youre still young, thats your fault,
There's so much you have to know.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
I was once like you are now, and I know that its not easy,
To be calm when you've found something going on.
But take your time, think a lot,
Why, think of everything you've got.
For you will still be here tomorrow, but your dreams may not.
Son
How can I try to explain, when I do he turns away again.
Its always been the same, same old story.
From the moment I could talk I was ordered to listen.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
Father
It's not time to make a change,
Just sit down, take it slowly.
You're still young, that's your fault,
There's so much you have to go through.
Find a girl, settle down,
If you want you can marry.
Look at me, I am old, but I'm happy.
(son-- away away away, I know I have to
Make this decision alone - no)
Son
All the times that I cried, keeping all the things I knew inside,
Its hard, but it's harder to ignore it.
If they were right, I'd agree, but it's them you know not me.
Now there's a way and I know that I have to go away.
I know I have to go.
(father-- stay stay stay, why must you go and
Make this decision alone? )

(This was wa-a-ay back when I was a techno-phobic music school graduate, unhappy with the resulting income and career options)
I knew NOTHING AT ALL about computers, but I was intrigued (and a little desperate), so I took a chance and went for it - took to it like a fish to water, aced the course, landed my first programming job and the rest is history :).
And to think I avoided computer classes in college because my friends told me "they're really hard - they'll ruin your GPA". Silly me - I WISH I'd gotten into the business a few years earlier!
The best advice I ever got:
1) "take any and all advice your lawyer gives you."
2) all advice my lawyer gave me (don't ask)
3) you have to fight for your right to determine your own career path
4) change your look- you're too old to look like a student any more
