They were talking about the 90's last night and of course Tim Berners-Lee and the WWW got a mention. They then went on to talk about how it was inspired by this Victorian book, 'Enquire Within Upon Everything'.
The spooky thing is - I have that book! I picked it up secondhand a few years ago and was fascinated by it, and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since!
I had absolutely no idea of it's significance. How bizarre! :)
On Enquire Within, Wikipedia states:
As of the 89th edition, there were 1,180,000 copies published. As of the 113th edition, there were 1,500,000 copies published.
Both are incredibly eclectic in the range of advice offered, great fun to dip into every now and again and, bearing in mind the quantities sold, usually found in abundance in antiquarian/second-hand book shops.

read tim berners-lee's "weaving the web"
I will add it to my amazon wish list forthwith!
it should be a prerequisite to working on web applications
I've been too busy working on web applications to read about the history of the web ;)
I have a copy c.1920 in beautiful condition
My copy is rather tatty unfortunately, and I think it may be earlier, in fact it looked like the very same one which Andrew Marr was wielding about on TV.

I did wonder if it was worth anything, but a look on ebay appears to confirm the fact that there are lots of them about!
