Don't know whether any of you other brits here been watching Andrew Marr's great programme 'A History of Modern Britain'?

They were talking about the 90's last night and of course Tim Berners-Lee and the WWW got a mention. They then went on to talk about how it was inspired by this Victorian book, 'Enquire Within Upon Everything'.

The spooky thing is - I have that book! I picked it up secondhand a few years ago and was fascinated by it, and it's been sitting on my shelf ever since!

I had absolutely no idea of it's significance. How bizarre! :)

read tim berners-lee's "weaving the web".
it should be a prerequisite to working on web applications.

Wasnt it originally designed so his firm could keep track of documents?

I beleive he wanted to make it easier for scientists to find research papers, by having them linked together.

A wonderfully fascinating book - I have a copy c.1920 in beautiful condition, likewise a pristine copy c.1880 of Consult Me, which is "a new and improved edition written by the author of Enquire Within..."

On Enquire Within, Wikipedia states:

As of the 89th edition, there were 1,180,000 copies published. As of the 113th edition, there were 1,500,000 copies published.

Both are incredibly eclectic in the range of advice offered, great fun to dip into every now and again and, bearing in mind the quantities sold, usually found in abundance in antiquarian/second-hand book shops.

I will add it to my amazon wish list forthwith!

I've been too busy working on web applications to read about the history of the web ;)

My copy is rather tatty unfortunately, and I think it may be earlier, in fact it looked like the very same one which Andrew Marr was wielding about on TV.

I did wonder if it was worth anything, but a look on ebay appears to confirm the fact that there are lots of them about!

Odhams continued publishing "Enquire Within" as a budget title throughout the 20th century.

If you really want to know the retail value of a copy, or any other book, look on abebooks.
