Divide by common factor (x-y) to simplify:
(x+y) = y

Substitute the price of apples = $1... recall the price of pears = the price of apples, hence $1...

If you're adding holes, you have to express it in terms of the volume of the hole, or area if the hole is in two dimensions.

foo+foo=2foo

Which is still zero:

x=y=2
x=y
2=2
xx = xy
2*2=2*2
xx - yy = xy - yy
2*2 - 2*2 = 2*2 - 2*2
4-4 = 4-4
