The scam was uncovered when Japanese moviestar Maiko Kawamaki went on a talk-show and wondered why her new pet would not bark or eat dog food.

Someone (probably an editor at a UK paper with large-type headlines) is having the wool pulled over their eyes.

Interesting... my research reveals there is a recent story floating around the Japanese blogosphere involving Maiko Kawakami (not Kawamaki), a poodle and a sheep, but the various reports in the English language "press" about along the lines of the one linked here seem to have been embellished by flights of fantasy.

Snopes says it's a fake:

My Japanese acquaintances confirm this.

Must be healthy "poodles" since no one apparently took their $1600 acquisition to a vet.

Don't animals imported into Japan have to go thru some inspection process?

Surprised anyone fell for this obvious hoax.
