There's a town called *-*-*-*-I-N-G in Austria.
can't post the URL in Wikipedia because the filter here messes it up. Predictably, their signboard gets stolen all the time!

The village is known to have existed as *-*-*-*-I-N-G since at least 1070 and is named after a man from the 6th century called Focko. “Ing” is an old Germanic suffix meaning “people”; thus the name, in this case, means “place of Focko’s people”.

In 2004, due to the stolen signs and embarrassment over the name, a vote was held on changing the name, but the town's residents voted against doing so.

Also see [en.wikipedia.org ]

By the way, there's also a French town called 'Condom'.

Slightly off topic.

Back in 1999 my wife and I took a touring holiday in the US, which included a week in Myrtle Beach. While there we noted lots of references to it being the "shagging capital of the world", "shagging on the beach" and the "world shagging championships", etc.

Here in the UK shagging has a different meaning (like the place in Austria). You can imagine the laugh when we got back and I showed my colleagues all my leaflets and brochures about shagging. They were very impressed, I must say.

For the non US people in here the "shag" is a dance. I just did a quick search in Google for Myrtle beach shagging and I found these humdingers ...

"Twice each year shaggers flock to the Ocean Drive section of North Myrtle Beach"

"Now "Shaggers" enjoy performing their magic to everything from gospel to music from the big band era"

"We welcome shagger's of all ages."

"Over 15,000 Shaggers attend the Myrtle Beach "Spring Safari" in March"

"Beach Shaggers Hall of Fame"

Incientally, my wife and I tried a bit of shagging but we were younger then.

Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Ayuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit

Not a town but a street wherein is now situated the Bank of England formerly the local red light area.
Threadneedle Street (think about it) in London used to be called Grope#*$! Lane till the euphemistic Victorians sort of cleaned it up.
Unusual only because it has nothing whatsovever to do with thread or needle.

I am actually from nearby #*$!ing. In the area there's also a place called "Rottenegg". Across the border in Bavaria, there's a Kissing and a Petting.

That be on Dartmoor, not far from Tavistock. If you're in Tavi, take the A390 westwards to Gulworthy Cross and turn right when you see the sign to Chipshop.

As I was told, the place is so named as it grew up around the chip shop, where miners could exchange the chips in which they were paid for goods (normally at extortionate prices).

Cool, I might try and check that out sometime, and then maybe I'll go to Beer (also in Devon, albeit in the other direction) afterwards, for a nice refreshing, er, beer ;)

I just thought about Bearsden in Glasgow. I am actually going there this afternoon but it's funny how names like this, with which you are very familiar don't appear to be that odd.

Incidentally Bearsden is far from being a bear's den. It is actually a highly desirable residential area on the outskirts of the city.

Here are a few from where I live, Australia:

Iron Knob
Manly
Bobbin Head
Blowhard
Mount Mee
Cockburn
Mt Buggery
Bone's Knob
Middle Intercourse Island
Chinaman's Knob
Wet Beaver Creek
Christmas Island
Howlong

It's true that with some places, they are so familiar sounding that you don't notice what other meaning the names might have. :)

The next town over from Intercourse, PA is called Bird-in-Hand. I belive this area has a high concentration of Amish. I guess the Amish has a good sense of humour.
