Going through "Update Hell" this morning

Took ages until I could start working.

I switched on my computers in the office and sure enough the regular message from my antivirus program popped up to announce the daily update. Only this time a new program version was available. So I installed it and let it restart the computers.

Ready to go to work - so I thought, windows anounced that a security update was available. So I let it install, restarted the computers and was ready to start my working day - not yet.

I opened my browser and a moment later the Firewall software anounced that it wanted to update, too. Of course all my previous settings for the secure programs were lost in the update process and my LAN was not working anymore. So I had to change the settings and now I am getting those PopUp messages again every other second that program X wants to connect with the network - Deny or Allow.

AAAAAHHH. This cannot be how things are meant to be.

Have to interupt my little rant though - the Adobe Reader Update Manager wants my attention.

I think it is more of a reflection on the state of modern software than anything else.

I have a program on my computer called "Little Snitch" that does this.

I leave it on, because I am interested in knowing who "phones home."

A LOT of programs do. It's much, much better for Macs than for Windows, but it is still a big issue.

Even freeware programs do it.

Time for new firewall software, maybe.

It's time to worry when your computer flashes you this message: "Now *I* need an update. I quit!" <blue screen>
