Now that's a Taxi ride.

New York couple taking cab trip to Arizona retirement

Betty and Bob Matas have retired and are moving to Arizona, but like many New Yorkers they don't drive, and they don't want their cats to travel all that way in an airliner cargo hold.

They plan to leave Tuesday on the 2,400-mile trip to Sedona, Arizona., in a yellow SUV cab 10 hours a day for a flat fee of $3,000, plus gas, meals and lodging.

As a former cab driver I would refuse that fare. Sounds like a nightmare being trapped in a car with those cat people for a few days.

Every other cab driver I knew that had a fare that traveled more than a couple hundred miles ended up hating the trip.

Plus .... why is this in the news. It happens frequently.

Hey for 3,000 dollars for two days travel( or three ) he's
making a hell of lot more than I for a couple days of work.
Also it's a lot warmer in Arizona than N.Y. right now.

CNN - is this a sign the web is making some media outlets look just a little (being generous with that word) silly?

I cannot believe somewhere like New York does not have proffessional movers that are more than happy to handle pets, without involving an airline.

Or if that does not work, don't they have any friends?!

Phranque,

Do the math! 8 days x 10 hours= 80 hrs divided into $ 3,000.00
equals $ 375.00 per day or 37.50 an hour. Not a fortune but still
a pretty nice gig!

Got to remember the fare is picking up all the expenses gas, lodging
food etc. If he owns the medallion he should come out alright
at least better than I have been doing lately.

37 bucks per hour, minus the wear and tear on the car, minus the other fixed expenses like insurance

plus he does not get to go to his own home every night

and he better hope his car does not break down on the way there or back

Rugles,

Yes I use to hack, but that was in another life.

Car insurance is constant whether he stays in NY or is on the road.

There is no greater wear and tear on a cab than all the stop & go

you get in a metro area. As far as not being home every night view

it as a vacation or an adventure. I think it would be nice break

from every day routine. But thats just me.

A New York City hack on a very, very good day might bring home about a hundred and fifty bucks (usually much less) for a 12-hour shift. At 6 shifts a week, which many work, three grand is close to a month's take home for most, so this is not a bad gig at all.

I once helped someone move her household goods and two cats from TX to CA. It was rental truck, not a cab or minivan. A 3 day road trip from hell. Never again!

Let's see how the cabbie feels after this trip.

Amen. Sounds like a decent enough fare, but only just.

But ... hire a cab to take you, your favorite human, your 2 cats, and some junk 2400 miles? For $3000? I mean, unless you have no drivers' license and insurance, why not go U-Haul? Or Ryder? Or something similar? To say nothing of renting an SUV from Enterprise, or any other car-rental agency.

there are literally millions of new yorkers who have never driven and never would consider doing so...

Wow. Sounds almost like a different planet. If you live there all your life, though, I can see how that makes sense. It also makes people not want to leave, or if they do, to move to similar mega-cities where driving isn't required. Interesting.

But ... they're moving to Arizona. They plan to continue not driving at all, there? Impressive, I 'spose.

Good points King Fisher.

I would refuse the fare if I was still driving cab.

Besides, if he owns that car, it is only getting 10 hours use a day. If it was back in the city, the wheels would be turning 20 to 24 hours a day.

Who knows, maybe the cabbie is considering it a paid vacation or an adventure like you said.

Hmmm, $3,000 guaranteed in your pocket for maybe a week's work against maybe $900 for a week and you'd still refuse the fare?

Just to get the heck out of town for a few days would be worth it for a lot of nyc hacks.

Rugles,

Good points also! I guess if you can hack cabs your can hack code too!

Only had one fare jump ship without paying. I chase him for a half
a block before I remembered I had left the cab running!

We should get together over a beer sometime and swap cabbie stories.

Hacking gave me more insight on the human condition than two years in
the Army and four years in college

>>>Hacking gave me more insight on the human condition

Oh man... that is so true. It is amazing what people will tell you. You find out who is dealing drugs, who is cheating on their wife, who the bookies are .... it was like a soap opera every night. You go from driving a crack whore to her dealer to driving a millionaire to the airport all in 10 minutes.

That is the reason I would not want to spend 4 days trapped with some strangers, people are wierd.

I hear that... but some times fascinating!
