Some time ago, I didn't use Skype. I remember the test messages used to have a clear Russian or Ukranian accent.

To my surprise, now they don't hace a Russian accent, but they have a British accent ... oh, well.

Why Skype wasn't created by an American company?

I think the founders of Skype were from scandinavian countries. Sweden or Denmark. So probably it was a scandinavian accent. (Børk! Børk! Børk!)

Go wash your mouth! IIRC Skype was developed in Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. So you probably heard an Estonian accent. Most Estonians don't really like Russians.

I thought the current test message voice had a Scottish accent.

Not a thing - I like Scottish and Irish accents. Hope it's not "wrang" to mention those two in the same sentence! ;)

<sarcastic humor> They ought to make it a user preference as to what type of accent we want to hear when making test calls. Scottish, English, Deep South, whatever. After all, it's just one more bell or whistle they can spend their time on instead of features that might actually be useful... </sarcastic humor>

RonPK, -- Most Estonians don't really like Russians. ---

I think they don't like Latvians more than they don't like Russians.

In any event what made you think it was Russian Accent?

No it doesn't - that was my point ;)

I have never in my life heard anyone in Scotland using the term "Hoots mon". Its association with Scotland is a popular misconception. In actual fact it is a medieval French expression pronounced "oots mong" meaning "outside my" or in this context outside of my maison.

It was a common cry in the olden days of thatch roofed houses. When a fire started the call "Hoots mon" would often be heard above the roaring, crackling flames. Perhaps some of the Francophiles in the forum can enlighten us further?

Bee Dee,

I bow to your superior knowledge.

This probably proves the old saying:

"never use a word you can't spell, can't pronounce and don't know the
meaning of"
