Laptops will overtake desktop PCs as the dominant form of computer in 2011, according to a report by analysts IDC.
The demand for bulky machines will continue to slowly grow but at a declining rate as portable machines become quicker and more efficient.

The report predicts the laptop market will grow by 16.1% year-on-year until 2011, compared to 3.8% for desktop PCs.

It's blurred by the desktop becoming a consumer item, such as PS3 & Xbox, or home technology control system.

I have to admit I use my laptop much more than my desktop.

I'd say that I don't use my laptop because of speed or efficiency, because it has neither compared to my pc; it's just portable - that's it. For me, it doesn't have to do with anything else. Portability is king nowadays.

I have trouble believing that laptops will out sell desktops.

People dont like paying the premium for a laptop, they are never as fast, the screen is smaller, the keyboard is smaller, etc.

But, if you are in a airport or hotel room ... they rock.

You can always hook a laptop up to a larger monitor, but you're not going to fit a desktop on your lap.

If you want to "work" out by the pool or at Starbucks, you'd need to drag the desktop and monitor (not to mention power cords) with you.

If you're chained to a cubicle all day, chances are you'll favor a desktop. But others will prefer the roaming capabilities of laptops.
